Frequently asked questions

How long should a password be?

At least 15 characters when the password alone protects an account, and at least 8 when it is used with a second factor such as a code from an app. Those are the minimums in NIST's current guidance, SP 800-63B-4. A random 16-character password clears both.

Are the generated passwords really random?

Yes. Password Generator uses crypto.getRandomValues, the browser's cryptographic random source, and makes the password on your device. It is never sent anywhere or stored.

Is it safe to type my real password into the strength checker?

Password Strength Checker runs in your browser and never sends the password anywhere; it still works with the internet switched off once the page has loaded. Even so, the safest habit is to test a password that is similar to yours rather than the real one.

How does the age calculator count months and days?

Age Calculator counts whole months from your birth date, then the days left over, and years are those months divided by 12. If you were born on 31 January, you are a month older on 28 February, or 29 in a leap year, because a month without a 31st ends on its last day.
