Compress Image to 200 KB

To get a photo under 200 KB, drop it below: the 200 KB limit is already set, so it is compressed at once and ready to download. A 12 MP phone photo comes out 2048 to 3200 pixels wide and stays clean.

How sharp a photo stays at 200 KB

We measured it with this tool on four 12 MP photos (4000 x 3000 pixels, 1.2 to 3.8 MB each, the size many phone cameras save): a landscape, a face, a boat and a close-up of cloth. To fit 200 KB, the tool made them 2048 to 3200 pixels wide, 3 to 7.7 megapixels, and saved them at JPG quality 35 to 40%. They look clean, even zoomed in to full size.

Why not keep all 4000 pixels? At that width the same photos fit 200 KB only at quality 7 to 24%, where the picture breaks into blocks and the colours shift. So the tool never goes below quality 30% while a smaller size still fits: it makes the photo 20% narrower at a time until it fits at 30% or better, then picks the highest quality that fits.

A photo that already fits at 30% or better keeps its size. An upright photo keeps its shape, so it comes out taller than it is wide (2400 x 3200 pixels in our test). If the form asks for an exact width and height, use [Photo & Signature Resizer](/tools/photo-signature-resizer), which keeps the size you set.

200 KB here means 200,000 bytes. Some upload forms count 1 KB as 1024 bytes and allow 204,800 bytes; a file under 200,000 bytes passes both.

How to compress an image to 200 KB

  1. Drop up to 20 photos on the box or tap it to pick them. Exact KB size is already on, with 200 KB picked.
  2. Leave the format on JPG, the safe choice for upload forms. Each photo is compressed as soon as it is added and shows its new size and its width and height.
  3. Download each photo, or use Download all. If the form also asks for an exact width and height, use Photo & Signature Resizer instead.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my photo smaller in pixels after compressing to 200 KB?

Because at full size it would not fit at quality 30% or better. A 12 MP photo kept at 4000 pixels fits 200 KB only at quality 7 to 24% and turns blocky, so the tool makes it narrower instead. In our test the photos came out 2048 to 3200 pixels wide at quality 35 to 40%.

Can I keep my photo's full size under 200 KB?

Not on this page, if it would fall under quality 30%. To keep exact pixels, use [Photo & Signature Resizer](/tools/photo-signature-resizer): it keeps the width and height you set and lowers the quality as far as the limit needs.

Is 200 KB 200,000 or 204,800 bytes?

This tool counts 1 KB as 1000 bytes, so the file is at most 200,000 bytes. That also passes a form that counts 1 KB as 1024 bytes, which allows up to 204,800 bytes. Your phone may show the result a little under 200 KB, such as 190 KB, for the same reason.

Can a PNG get under 200 KB?

Saved as PNG, a photo can only get smaller by losing pixels, since PNG has no quality setting. The tool then shrinks its width and height step by step until it fits. Leave the format on JPG for photos.
