How to generate lorem ipsum text

What is lorem ipsum?
Lorem ipsum is placeholder text that fills a layout before the real words are ready. It looks like Latin but does not read as sentences, so people look at the design instead of the copy.
Where does lorem ipsum come from?
It comes from sections 1.10.32 and 1.10.33 of Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. The words were cut and scrambled; lorem is the end of dolorem, meaning pain. Letraset transfer sheets made it the standard filler for typesetters in the 1960s.

What does lorem ipsum dolor sit amet mean?
On its own, nothing, because the words were pulled out of context. The original line, qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet, is part of a passage saying that no one loves pain for its own sake.

Is the text different every time?
Yes. After the optional fixed opening, words are picked at random from a list of about 80 Latin words, so each click gives a new mix. Each paragraph is one long sentence, or two when it starts with the classic opening.
How much placeholder text should I use?
About as much as the real text that will go there. Too little filler hides problems like long titles wrapping onto two lines or one card growing taller than its neighbours.
Can I leave lorem ipsum on a live website?
No. Readers take it as a sign the page is unfinished, and one forgotten block is easy to miss. Search your pages for the word lorem before you publish.
